Scholarships

The American Association of University Women was founded in 1882 for the purpose of “uniting of the alumnae of different institutions for practical educational work.” In accordance with the goal of working for broader opportunities for women, the Elmira-Corning Branch of the Association offers annual scholarships of varying amounts to women pursuing an associate or bachelor degree at an accredited college or university.

Three different scholarships are awarded and the same application is used for all scholarships.  The scholarships offer our moral and financial support to mature women who are well along in their studies in their quest to develop and improve their careers.  To be eligible, the applicant must be at least 24 years old and enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours.  Scholarship amounts range from $500 – $2,000.

The Return to Learning Scholarship
The Elmira-Corning branch of AAUW is proud to offer Return to Learning Scholarships to mature women who are working toward an associate or bachelor’s degree.  These scholarship amounts are determined by the success of our fund raising projects and have ranged from $500 -$2,000 in previous years.

The Zelda Sadinsky Scholarship
The Zelda Sadinsky Scholarship is a memorial to a branch member who let our support make a significant impact in her life. First awarded in 2005, this scholarship is supported with funds from the Sadinsky family, members of our community and AAUW branch members.

The Pauline (Polly) Leveen Memorial Scholarship ($500.00)
In honor of a long time AAUW member and retired Corning Community College Professor who was very active in AAUW and passionate about the mission.  First awarded in 2015, this scholarship is supported with funds from the Leveen family, members of our community and AAUW branch members.
In 2015, the family of Pauline (Polly) Leveen established a perpetual scholarship in memory of Polly. All funds contributed by friends and colleagues will be added to the fund as they are received. The scholarship is a lasting tribute to Polly for her many years of service to our organization and our community. Polly was an inspiration to all of us and will be greatly missed as we go forward.  If you wish to contribute to this scholarship fund in Polly’s name, please send your donation to:
